IT Band Syndrome Treatment

Iliotibial tract syndrome is a condition that presents as an aching, burning pain that can over time become a sharp or stabbing feeling.  This pain can not only be felt on the outside of the knee or lower thigh, but also higher up the thigh nearer the hip.

IT band syndrome is a common running injury, often a result biomechanical issues, excessive training or increasing training too quickly.  This injury that can be diagnosed by answering some questions and a physical examination, rarely are scans required for this.

As an initial treatment we would suggest RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation), once the inflammation and pain subside physiotherapy will help to correct the condition.  Depending on the cause of the injury there are different routes that your physio may take to improve strength, mobility and flexibility.

For muscle tightness shockwave therapy can be alternative to stretching and manual therapy.
